Most woven laundry baskets are seagrass wrapped around nothing at all — the weave itself is asked to hold the whole shape, and once it is loaded daily for a year the sides start to bow outward and the rim goes soft. Ours has a powder-coated steel frame running through the base and up the rim, so the seagrass is doing what it does best, which is looking good and breathing air through the weave, while the frame carries the actual load.
The liner is plain cotton canvas, unbleached, cut generously so it folds over the rim rather than sitting loose inside. It is removable for washing and comes included in the price rather than sold as an add-on, because a liner-less woven basket snags delicate fabric on the weave edges almost immediately.
Frame first, weave second
Steel frame construction is the single biggest difference between this basket and the ones sold three-for-the-price elsewhere. The frame is welded into a rim ring and a base ring, powder-coated to resist the humidity a laundry room usually holds, and the seagrass is hand-woven onto that skeleton in a herringbone pattern that keeps tension even as the basket flexes slightly under a heavy wet load.
55 litres holds roughly two adult loads of mixed laundry before it needs emptying, which is the volume we settled on after the thirty-day home test flagged anything smaller as a basket you carry to the machine twice a week instead of once. Anything larger stopped fitting through a standard bedroom door frame when full, so we did not go bigger.
We do not carry plastic storage. It cracks in a Texas summer and we are not going to pretend otherwise — that same reasoning is why this basket is steel and seagrass rather than a molded plastic hamper with a lid that yellows within a year on a sunlit landing.
